With the mailing of the 3rd quarter water and sewer bills, some questions have been raised about the rates.
In 2023, the flat rate for combined water and sewer services was $600. In 2024, this rate increased by $150 to $750 per year, which adds up to an extra $12.50 per month. These rates apply to each unit, with duplexes paying double. There has been no change in the water usage charges for either year.
The water and sewer service operates as a self-funded utility, meaning it is primarily paid for through user fees, which must be enough to cover all costs. If there’s a shortfall, it must be covered by taxes through the town’s budget.
For 2024, the utility aims to collect enough fees to avoid a deficit. The new rates took effect in the second quarter of 2024, so while the total annual increase is $150, homeowners will see an actual increase of $112.50 this year, or about $9.37 per month.
