How the Governor's Executive Order to Suspend Construction Impacts Residents

Governor Murphy recently signed an executive order to suspend all non-essential construction projects throughout the state. The following projects are still considered essential and may continue:

  • Projects already underway involving individual single-family homes, or an individual apartment unit where an individual already resides, with a construction crew of 5 or fewer individuals.  This includes additions to single-family homes such as solar panels.
  • Projects already underway involving a residential unit for which a tenant or buyer has already entered into a legally binding agreement to occupy the unit by a certain date, and construction is necessary to ensure the unit’s availability by that date.
  • Any emergency repairs necessary to ensure the health and safety of residents.

The city is continuing inspections on new construction with instructions that no one be on the job site but the inspectors.

CO's for property transfers are being handled with certifications by the realtor and/or owners for smoke alarms, CO2 alarms and fire extinguishers, no onsite inspections by our code officials for those are occurring.
